A message for a multiplexed serial bus (106) includes a routing header (1000, 1100). The routing header is independent of the protocol used for framing packets on the serial bus. The routing header identifies whether it is attached to a data message or a command message, and includes information about the destination of the message. The format of the routing header is independent of the format of the data message or command message to which it is attached. The message also includes a data message or command message. A framer (1302) produces framed messages corresponding to messages received from the serial bus. A router (1304) coupled to the framer receives the framed messages from the framer and outputs the framed messages to respective protocol handlers based upon the routing header in each message.
