PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To align a cartridge without requiring a dedicated sensing mechanism by sensing first and second areas through a photosensor to obtain data indicative of the difference of reflectance and comparing that data with a predetermined target area of first predetermined pattern to determine the positional difference between the first and second areas. SOLUTION: A first predetermined pattern is printed in a predetermined target area 305 on a blank print medium by ejecting color ink from one writing instrument. The first area 305 of print target is generated while superposing on the first predetermined pattern and a second area 303 is generated contiguously to the first area 305 by ejecting ink from other writing instrument thus printing a second predetermined pattern on the print medium. The first and second areas 305, 303 are sensed by means of a photosensor to obtain data indicative of the difference of reflectance and that data is compared with the position of a predetermined target area of first predetermined pattern to determine the positional difference between the first and second areas 305, 303.
