PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new quinoline-condensed cyclic compound which has a strong antiviral activity against viruses including picornavirus and hyprotavirus and is useful as an antiviral agent. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 is a lower alkyl, phenyl or 4- fluorophenyl; R2 is H, a halogen, a lower alkyl or a lower alkoxy; R3 is a halogen, a lower alkyl or a lower alkoxy; (m), (n) and (p) are each 1 to 3], for example, 5-ethyl-8-isopropyl-5,10-dihydro-11H-indeno[1,2-b]quinolin-10-one. The compound of formula I can be produced, for example, by a method comprising subjecting an isatoic anhydride of formula II and a 1-indanone [(n) is 1], 1-tetralone [(n) is 2] or 1-oxobenzosuberone [(n) is 3] of formula III to a ring- closing condensation reaction in the presence of n-butyl lithium and tetramethylethylenediamine.
