PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stereoselectively reducing chiralα- orβ- ketoester because a chirally functionalized alcohol is extremely important, for example, as an effective enzyme inhibitor for an anticancer therapy, a protein kinase C inhibitor or an anti-HIV agent. SOLUTION: This method for stereoselectively reducing chiralα- orβ- ketoester comprises reducing theα- orβ-ketoester having a chiral center at theγ-position by using a reductant obtained by reacting NaBH4 and (D)- or (L)-tartaric acid in an inert solvent at (-80)-(+50) deg.C to provide respectively corresponding diastereomeric hydroxy compounds. |
