PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color and shape recognition device which identifys the color and shapes of objects, such as glass or synthetic resins and is suitable for automatic recognition of the colors and shapes of waste glass bottles by utilizing transmitted light in particular. SOLUTION: The light transmitted through or reflected from the objects 3 is reflected to plural surface mirrors 4 having >=2 mirror finished surfaces, by which plural images are formed on color image pickup device 6. The corresponding number of beam attenuation filters 5 are installed in the optical path thereof to create the plural beam attenuation regions varying in light transmittance. The colors and shapes are identified in the regions respectively suitable for the colors and shapes. The objects 3 are the glass bottles and are subjected to the identification of the colors and shapes by the light transmitted through the glass bottle 3.
