PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a casting piece cooling method which can reduce a center porosity or a center segregation to be generated at a center part of the casting piece in the steel continuous casting. SOLUTION: In a bloom or a billet continuous casting, a casting piece 4 surface is water cooled by a water volume density of 100-300 litre/(min.m2) in a solidification terminal force cooling band 8 at a position 0.1-2.0 m before the casting direction spearhead of a residual molten metal pool or a period where a casting piece center part solid phase ratio becomes 0.99 or more from 0.1-0.8. By so doing, a shrinkage speed of outer face can be made bigger than that of the casting center part, resulting in reducing the generation of the center porosity or center segregation at the casting piece 4 center part.
