Preparation of novel telechilic oligomers and polymers of number average molecular weight 500-10000 by prepared by radical polymerization of a monomer (A), with a functional alkoxyamine initiator (B) and a functionalizing reagent (C). Telechilic oligomers and polymers of number average molecular weight 500-10000 are prepared by radical polymerization of a monomer (A), with a functional alkoxyamine initiator (B) and a functionalizing reagent (C). The telechilic compounds are of formula (I). The monomer (A), which has no groups which react with isocyanate, alcohols, carboxylic acids and/or epoxides, is of formula (III). The functionalized alkoxyamine initiator (B) is of formula (IV): Y-Q-OH (I) -(-CHR'-CR''R'''-)n- (II) CHR'=R''R''' (III) R<14>R<15>C=CR<16>(R<17>-Y) (V) Y = a functional group which can react with isocyanate, alcohols, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, and/or epoxides; Q = optionally substituted hydrocarbon of Mn 500-10000 of formula (II); n = 3-500; R', R'', and R''' = H, 1-20C (cyclo)alkyl, 6-24C aryl, halo, CN, 1-20C alkyl ester or amide, 6-24C aryl ester or amide, or contains other substituents, e.g. ether groups, and also a compound of ring structure, e.g. a cyclic anhydride, ester, amide, or hydrocarbon R<1>,R<2>,R<3> = H, 1-20C (cyclo)alkyl, 6-24C aryl, halo, 1-20C alkyl ester or amide, 6-24C aryl ester or amide; R<4>,R<5> = 1-24C aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or mixed aliphatic/aromatic residue which can also be part of a 4-8 member ring, where the C atom directly adjacent to the alkoxyamine nitrogen of the R<3> and R<4> residues is substituted with other organic substituents (not H) or is substituted with a double bonded C, O, S, or N atom and some other organic substituent, and where at least one of R<4> and R<5> can contain a group Y which can react with isocyanates, alcohols, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, and/or epoxides, optionally in the presence of an additional reagent (C), of formula (V) , which breaks the chain after the monomer is used up, and contains a functional group Y, as defined above, and an R17 group between the double bond and Y; R<14>,R<15>,R<16> = H, aryl, or halo substituted alkyl, prepared by living radical polymerization; and R<17> = linear or branched, optionally substituted alkyl chain of at least one -CH2- group.
