POLYAMIDE COMPOUNDS AND LIQUID CRYSTAL ALIGNING AGENTS CONTAINING THE SAME

Polyamide compounds useful as liquid crystal aligning agents permitting well-balanced general improvement in various characteristics desirable for liquid crystal aligning agents, e.g., pretilt angle, alignment properties, electrical characteristics including residual charge, voltage retention and image persistence, and so on. The polyamide compounds are represented by general formula (1): (wherein R<1> is a divalent organic residue derived from a dicarboxylic acid and R<2> is a divalent organic residue derived from a diamine, with the proviso that at least either of R<1> and R<2> is a divalent organic residue having a side chain group of three or more carbon atoms; R<3> and R<4> are each independently hydrogen or a monovalent organic group, with the proviso that the content of the monovalent organic group is 30 mole % or above based on the total amount of R<3> and R<4>; and n is a natural number), with R<2> being selected from the group consisting of organic residues having side chain groups of three or more carbon atoms.
