When a storage device (13A) having only an analog input terminal (Ain) is connected, MPEG audio data is decoded, converted to analog data, and output from a terminal (Aout). When a storage device (13B) having a PCM audio input terminal (Din) is connected, MPEG audio data is decoded, and output from a terminal (Dout). When a storage device (13C) having a bidirectional digital interface terminal (Dif) such as IEEE1394 is connected, ATRAC data is output from a terminal (Dif). In such a system for distributing contents, the type of received data can be selected depending on the type of the storage device connected with IRD.
