PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more effective similar picture retrieval by easily calculating a feature quantity of parts other than an unnecessary part of a picture. SOLUTION: When a retrieval object picture is designated in a step S21 in the case that a picture similar to the retrieval object picture is retrieved from plural pictures, a feature quantity of the picture is calculated in a step S22. At this time, an unnecessary area is excluded from the designated retrieval object picture to calculate the feature quantity; and in a step S23, this calculated feature quantity is used to retrieve the similar picture.
