The process and the polymers are new. Transparent and stable aqueous dispersions of hydrophilic polymers contain 30-60 wt.% of dispersed hydrophilic polymers of particle size 0.5-5 microns, and are stabilized by addition of at least one surfactant, in amount 1-6 wt.% per total wt. of dispersion. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of aqueous dispersions of hydrophilic polymers, comprising: (a) preparation of inverse emulsion by mixing and agitation of organic phase containing at least one surfactant and aqueous phase containing 30-50 (preferably 35-45) wt.% of at least one monomer, at wt. ratio of aqueous phase and organic phase 2.5-3.5 (preferably 2.6-2.9); (b) polymerization, using radical initiator, at 5-120 deg ; and (c) distillation and optional addition of water, to produce dry extract comprising 30-60 (preferably 38-45) wt.% of emulsion and wt. fraction of disperse phase 0.6-0.7; and (2) use of dispersions as claimed as thickeners in pigment printing process.
