The machining centre (1) has at least two heads (3,4) arranged on carriages (3a,4a) on a common straight horizontal way (2). Each head has two axes (X,Y) of linear travel, and a chuck, which can hold, rotate and position the workpiece. The first head collects a workpiece (W1) from a delivery chute (5). It moves to a first workstation (6), where it holds and rotates the workpiece as tools (6a,6b) perform metal removal operations. It transfers the part-machined workpiece to an interim storage station (7), where the periphery of the workpiece is held. The second head collects the workpiece from interim storage and transfers it through the operations of a further workstation (8), to a delivery station (9). Cutting operations, e.g. milling, turning and drilling, can be performed at one workstation, and grinding operations at another. |
