PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst of high polymerization activity which can give an ethylene/α-olefin random copolymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution, and also to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This method copolymerizes a >=3Cα-olefin and ethylene to produce the ethylene/α-olefin random copolymer in the presence of a catalyst composed of (A) a transition metal compound shown by the formula [M is titanium, zirconium or the like; R1 to R5 are each a halogen, hydrocarbon group or the like; A is carbon or the like; (m) and (n) are each an integer of O to 2; E is a substituent having an element of carbon, nitrogen or the like; (p) is a numeral which satisfies the valence number of M; and X is a halogen or the like], and (B) at least one type of compound selected from the group consisting of (B-1) an organometallic compound, (B-2) an organoaluminumoxy compound, and (B-3) a compound which reacts with the transition metal compound A to form the ion pair.
