PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain the lowering of apparent density of mixed raw material and to improve the metallization of a product reduced iron by compacting the mixed raw material under condition, in which the surface temp. of the mixed raw material or the generating ratio of volatile matter in the mixed raw material is not lower than a respectively specified value, and the reducing ratio of the mixed raw material is not higher than a specified value. SOLUTION: The mixed raw material of an iron raw material and a solid reducing agent is charged into a preheated reducing furnace. The apparent density of the mixed raw material is improved by compacting the gap generated with the volatile matter generated from the solid reducing agent by a compacted roll. This compacting operation is executed under conditions of >=500 deg.C surface temp. of the mixed raw material or >=80% generating ratio of the volatile matter in the mixed raw material and <=60% reducing ratio of the mixed raw material. The surface temp. of the mixed raw material is desirably at >=800 deg.C and in this method, the generating ratio of the volatile matter becomes 100%. Further, when the reducing ratio of the mixed raw material exceeds 60%, since the mixed raw material is sintered and the compacting operation becomes difficult, this ratio is desirably <=50%.
