PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid accidental reading stop by controlling a change of a compression method by a data compression means of the basis of image data stored in a storage means, its idle capacity and information of an original amount from a read means. SOLUTION: A data quantity of one image is estimated from image data stored in an image memory, whether or not the estimated data quantity can be stored in a free area of the image memory is judged, and the compression method of the image data after the judgement is decided on the basis of this judgement. According to this method, an event of stopping storage of the image data, that is, reading due to overflow of the image data can be avoided. Furthermore, a selection section selects a compression changeover mode where reading interruption can be avoided through the selection of the compression method of a compression non-changeover mode where the data are stored in the image memory without selecting the compression method and the reading is stopped when the idle capacity of the image memory is deficient.
