The control system is of a type used with industrial processes and the controller is coupled to a general computer using a unit having input/output modules (22). These allow communication with sensors and actuators and intermodule communication is made using and optical bus system (17). The modules have optical links (33,34) with internal boards having opto electrical stages (52,53).
