PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the rebound of a cutter at the time of controlling and absorbing the return movement of the cutter by an actuator by an absorbing member and to prevent the double cutting of a processing cloth. SOLUTION: This buttonhole formation device of a buttonhole sewing machine is provided with the cutter 13 for cutting the processing cloth and a driving mechanism 14. The driving mechanism 14 is provided with an attaching shaft 40, or the like, for supporting the cutter 13, a solenoid 45 for moving the cutter 13 and the attaching shaft 40, or the like, to and from the processing cloth and the absorbing member 49 abuttable to the attaching shaft 40 so as to control and absorb the return movement of the cutter 13 by the solenoid 45. The device moves the cutter 13 forward by the solenoid 45, cuts off holing stitches, then moves the cutter 13 back, separates it from the processing cloth and forms a buttonhole. The device controls the driving time of the solenoid 45 until the attaching shaft 40 is abutted to the absorbing member 49 when the cutter is moved back.
