PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain optically active 1-(p-mentha-2'-yl)ethanol and a perfume comprising 1-(p-mentha-2'-yl)ethanol as an active ingredient and to provide a method for producing the compound. SOLUTION: (1R,1'R,2'R,4'S)-1-(p-Mentha-2'-yl)ethanol is shown by the formula. This method for producing the compound comprises hydrogenating (2R,4S)-2- acetyl-p-mentha-6-ene in the presence of a ruthenium-phosphine complex such as diruthenium tetrachlorobis[2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'- binaphthyl]triethylamine to give (1R,2R,4S)-2-acetyl-p-menthane and then reducing the ketone part. |
