PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide shaft structure for starting a shield machine and a shield machine starting method dispensing with shaft cutting work and reducing shaft dimensions. SOLUTION: This shaft structure is provided with a start opening 4 opened in a side wall 2 of a shaft 1 to be the start base of a shield machine, and a part 6 of the shield machine detachably fitted to the start opening 4 so as to cover it. The shield machine is started from the shaft 1 by starting the shield machine covering the start opening 4 of the shaft side wall 2, so that demolishing work and cutting work of the shaft side wall 2 heretofore essential are entirely dispensed with. In addition, since a part 6a of the shield machine fitted to cover the start opening 4 is embedded in the plate thickness T of the side wall 2, the dimension D of the shaft 1 can be reduced by the embedded portion.
