PURPOSE: A backup light is provided to secure the traveling visual field of a following vehicle and to prevent an accident due to the disturbance on the visual field by automatically adjusting the brightness of a backup light depending on the distance from the following vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A brightness sensor(10) for sensing the brightness of a headlight of a following vehicle when a backup light(20) is lighted on is installed in the rear portion of a vehicle. The sensing signal of the brightness sensor is inputted to a comparator(70). The comparator discriminates the approach of the following vehicle by comparing the input brightness to a predetermined brightness. The discriminated signal controls a three-point relay(30) to discriminate the current applied to the backup light. Therefore, the brightness of the backup light is controlled automatically depending on the distance from the following vehicle.
