Method and apparatus for rotationally aligning an array, eg. a lenticular array is disclosed. An alignment beam 15 is scanned across the array 8 by mirror 40 and lens 50. During successive scans, light is incident on the two detectors 120 and 130 located near opposite edges of the array, and the detectors generate periodic signals (see figs. 10a, 10b). A phase difference between the two signal corresponding to a misalignment of the array is determined, and array is rotated to minimise this misalignment. The method and apparatus is used in production of a 3D image or a moving image, whereby a writing beam from the light source 10 is used to transfer colourant from a donor sheet 55 to the back surface of the array. The techniques ensure the scanning axis is not skewed relative to the long axis of the lenticules, allowing greater precision in forming the composite image.
