PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always adjust white balance properly for an image of an object desired of photographing independently of a color tone of the entire image. SOLUTION: One picture is divided into, e.g. three picture areas. The 1st picture area P10 includes an object P1 placed close to an electronic camera. The 2nd image area P20 includes an object P2 placed at an infinite point. The 3rd picture area P30 includes an object P3 at a distance between the objects P1 and P2. The picture area where an object image is focused is extracted from the picture areas P10, P20, P30. A controlled variable for white balance adjustment is found on the basis of an image pickup signal of the extracted picture area.
