摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide liquid crystal alignment layer manufactured with a new chemical adsorption substance with excellent productivity, being uniformly and toughly fixed to a substrate, being excellent in thermal stability and controllability of aligmnent, besides being transparent and realizing a wide viewing angle and having layer thickness of a nanometer level and a liquid crystal display device utilizing the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment layer incorporated in the liquid crystal display device is composed of a monolayer thin film consisting of adsorptive molecules having a chemical bond unit expressed by the formula chemically adsorbed to the substrate surface on which electrodes are formed with a siloxane bond. Furthermore, the pretilt angle and/or the pretilt azimuth of the liquid crystal molecules contained inside the cell gap are/is controlled by the incline of the long axis of the adsorptive molecules with respect to the substrate surface and/or its orientation bearing.
