A bench step (30) to aid in mounting a bench platform (2) provided by the common drywall bench (1) is provided having a support portion adapted to be fit over a step rail provided by the drywall bench, the support (36) portion being held in place on the step rail (16) by a flange (34) that extends from the support portion (31). A spacer portion (40) extends from the support portion (36) to distance the support portion (36) from a step portion (40) that extends out from the spacer portion (48). The step portion (40) is provided with structural support by a step support portion (40) that angles downwardly from the step portion (40) to contact the drywall bench (1) and thereby support the step portion (40). While the bench platform (2) provided by the common drywall bench (1) is usually accessed by stepping from the floor to a step rail (16) provided by the bench (30) and then subsequently stepping from the step rail (16) to the bench platform (2), the bench step (30) of the present invention facilitates access to the bench platform (2) by providing, by means of the step portion (40), an intermediate step between the floor and the step rail (16). Preferably, to provide structural integrity, the bench step (30) is formed from a single sheet of metal, such as aluminum, with each element of the bench step (30) being formed by means of a bend in the metal.
