The cutting gap setting method uses a setting mechanism with setting motors (26) for controlling the displacement of a counter-blade (6) relative to the chopping blades (3) of a rotary chopping drum (4), for adjusting the cutting gap, with detection of the optimum setting of the cutting gap for interrupting the setting movement, for either side of the counter-blade, e.g. via detection of an electrical arc discharge across the cutting gap.
