PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a 7-nitroindole useful as a medicine raw material in a sufficiently high yield by nitrating a 1-acylindoline-2-sulfonic acid alkali metal salt with acetyl nitrate and hydrolyzing the nitrated substance with an alkali. SOLUTION: A 1-acylindoline-2-sulfonic acid alkali metal salt of formula I (R1 is an alkyl; R2 and R3 are each H or an alkyl; M is an alkali metal) (e.g. sodium 1-acetylindoline-2-sulfonate 1/2 hydrate, etc.), is nitrated with acetyl nitrate of preferably 1.0-8.0 times as much as the mol of the salt preferably at -10 to 30 deg.C for 0.5-5 hours to give a nitrated product and hydrolyzing the nitrated product with an equimolar amount or more of an alkali (e.g. caustic soda, etc.), preferably at 20-60 deg.C for 0.5-5 hours to give a 7-nitroindole of formula II (e.g. 7-nitroindole, etc.).
