PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition which gives a coating film excellent in resistances to water and staining by using, as the essential ingredient, a polymer which is obtained by a multistep polymerization wherein a polymerizable monomer component containing a COOH-group-containing polymerizable monomer and a CO-group-containing polymerizable monomer, each in a specified content, is used at the final step. SOLUTION: This composition contains, as the essential ingredient, a polymer which is obtained by a multistep polymerization. At the final step of the multistep polymerization, a polymerizable monomer component [X] having (a) a content of a COOH-group-containing polymerizable monomer of 2.5-11 wt.% and (b) a content of a CO-group-containing polymerizable monomer of 0.2-10 wt.% is used, The total polymerizable monomer component for forming the polymer [Y] has (c) a content of a COOH-group-containing polymerizable monomer of 1.0-5.0 wt.% and (d) a content of a CO-group-containing polymerizable monomer of 0.1-5.0 wt.%, The polymer satisfies the relations: a-c=1.5 to 6.0, b-d=0.1 to 5.0, and X/Y=10/100 to 70/100. Preferably, the polymer has an average particle size of 50-200 nm.
