The invention relates to the use of a copolymer (A) in a varnish that is use d to produce varnish coatings and color- and/or effect-producing multi-layer coatings. Said copolymer (A) is obtained by radically polymerizing in an aqueous medium a) at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer and b) at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer of the general formula (I) R1R2C=CR3R4 that is different from the olefinically unsaturated monomer (a), wherein the residues R1, R2, R3 and R4 are independently hydrogen atoms or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, cycloalkylaryl, arylalkyl or arylcycloalky l groups, with the proviso that at least two of the variables R1, R2, R3 and R 4 represent substituted or unsubstituted aryl, arylalkyl or arylcycloalkyl groups, especially substituted or unsubstituted aryl groups.
