PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrict a wasteful consumption of ink and prevent recording media from being stained by monitoring a state under a carriage before printing by a reflection type optical sensor while the carriage is scanning, and interrupting printing at a time point when a stain or misprint on the recording media is detected. SOLUTION: After a recording medium 17 is set, positions of right and left ends of a leading end part of the recording medium 17 are detected by a reflection type optical sensor loaded to a carriage 13 together with a recording head 7, whereby a breadth of the recording medium is detected. A skew amount is calculated from a difference in detect position of the right end before and after the transfer. When the skew amount is smaller than a specified value, a printing execution operation is started. During the printing operation, an output change (density change) of the optical sensor at a recording area before the recording head 7 prints is monitored by the optical sensor. The printing is interrupted when a predetermined density change is detected. When the recording medium 17 is a roll paper, a part of the density change is delivered and cut, and then the printing is resumed. |
