PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relatively inexpensively and easily prevent the generation of malodors from garbage and more particularly to suppress the generation of ammonia by using a malodor preventive agent for refuse prepared from a wheat bran extract by an aqueous solution containing at least one kind of organic acids or the neutralized matter thereof as an effective component. SOLUTION: The malodor preventive agent for preventing the malodors generated from the garbage of perishable foods, such as cattle meat and fishes and shellfishes, derived at the time of production and processing of foods is prepared by contg. the wheat bran extract by the aqueous solution containing at least one kind of the organic acids or the neutralized matter thereof as the effective component. The malodor preventive agent is preferably formed in the form of an alcohol solution of the wheat bran extract and exhibits a higher sterilization effect as the concentration of the alcohol to be used is higher, for which 0.1 to 10% alcohol is usually used. The method of using the malodor preventive agent of the refuse is executed by sprinkling the malodor preventive agent in a powder form to the perishable foods, such as cattle meat and fishes and shellfishes, then mixing the perishable foods, such as cattle meat and fishes shellfishes, with the refuse at the time of their disposal.
