PURPOSE: A method for changing a master mode in a private switched network is provided to change the master node when a clock failure of the master mode occurs in the private switched network. CONSTITUTION: A diagnostic processing unit receives a message(401). A received message is analyzed(402). As the result of the analysis, the diagnostic processing unit determines whether the received message is a clock failure message or not (403). If the received message is not a clock failure message, the diagnostic processing unit determines whether a master mode setting flag is set or not(404). If the master mode setting flag is not set, the diagnostic processing unit carries out a clock recovery control operation(405). If the received message is a clock failure message, the diagnostic processing unit determines if there is a normal synchronization source clock among synchronization source clocks supplied from a digital trunk unit(406). If there is a normal synchronization source clock, the diagnostic processing unit carries out the function of changing a reference clock(407).
