PURPOSE: An automatic speed range selection method of an automatic transmission is provided to drive conveniently by automatically selecting a speed range of a selector lever with analyzing information on idling and signals on braking force. CONSTITUTION: An idling detecting unit detects RPM of an engine, and applies a signal to a control unit. The control unit detects idling of the engine(S101). A brake detecting unit decides braking force in not detecting idling of the engine(S102). Braking force of a parking brake is detected with analyzing the signal from a parking brake detecting unit in not generating braking force continuously(S103). The control unit decides starting of the vehicle in not generating braking force, and detects selection of the D-range through a signal from a selector lever detecting unit(S104). Selection of the N-range is decided in not selecting the D-range, and the control signal is applied to an actuator(S105). The selector lever is changed from the N-range to the D-range automatically according to the control signal(S106). Traveling is performed conveniently with changing the speed range automatically by detecting braking force and idling.
