A detergent tablet of compressed particulate composition comprises organic surfactant and water-soluble detergency builder. The tablet or its region comprises 25-80wt.% of particles of the water-soluble detergency builder and 20-50wt% of the non-soap organic detergent comprising anionic and nonionic surfactants in a wt ratio of 5:1-1.5:1. In addition to the particles the tablet or its region also comprises 15wt% or more of material other than soap or organic surfactant having a solubility in water of at least 10 g/l at 20 [deg]C. Also claimed are: (1) a detergent tablet of compressed particulate composition, the tablet or its region containing non-soap anionic surfactant, nonionic surfactant, preferably soap and other water-soluble ingredients. The particles contain at least 20 wt% of the anionic and non-ionic surfactants and a test tablet nonionic surfactant, and any soap in the same proportions, together with 15wt% of moisture has a breaking strength ( defined) of at least 0.04 MPa and a modulus ( defined) of not more than 10 MPa; and (2) a process for making a detergent tablet as above comprising mixing: (a) particles which contain 20-65wt% of non-soap organic surfactant comprising anionic and nonionic surfactants in a wt ratio of 5:1-1.5:1 with (b) material which is other than soap or organic surfactant and which has solubility in water of at least 10 g/l at 20[deg]C, and compacting the mixture into a tablet or its region. Preferably the particles contain 30-60wt% of the mixture of surfactants and soap. The tablet or its region contains 41-56wt% of the particles. The wt ratio of anionic to nonionic surfactant is 1.7:1-5:1 and the wt ratio fo the nonionic surfactant to soap in the particles is 10:1-30:1. The amount of non-soap organic surfactant in the particles is 22-45wt% and the amount of soap in the particles is 0.2-2wt%. The anionic surfactant is largely sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, optionally accompanied by a smaller amount of other anionic surfactant. The nonionic surfactant is largely ethoxylated fatty alcohol, optionally accompanied by other nonionic surfactant. The particles comprise 30-80wt% of the builder comprising alkali metal salt of a condensed phosphate, especially sodium tripolyphosphate. |
