The control of rate in system with digital data compression representative of physical quantities is carried out by use of a control parameter which is the distortion threshold (Di) of compressed data. The method also involves using a stage (E7) of modelling the relation between the rate (R) and the distortion (D) of compressed data by an affine model, estimated by adaptive filtering. The adaptive filtering is a Recursive Least Square (RLS) filtering. Independent claims are included for: (1) a control device for a data compression system; and (2) a digital apparatus incorporating the means for carrying out the compression rate control method of the invention.
