PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a display liquid which makes the display color and the nondisplay color clear and sharp in an electrophoretic display and which increases the contrast as the ratio of these colors by constituting the display liquid of microcapsule particles containing a dye or pigment, and pigment particles having a different tone from that of the dye or the pigment in the microcapsule in a colorless dispersion medium. SOLUTION: The microcapsule particles contain dye or pigment particles 2 in a dispersion medium 3 in the capsules 1. By encapsulating the dye soln. in the microcapsules 1, adsorption of the dye soln. to the surface of pigment particles can be prevented, and good contrast without color mixing can be obtd. When pigments of tow different tones are used, colors are mixed due to aggregation of particles. However, by encapsulating the pigment particles of one tone in the microcapsules 1, the surface state of particles can be changed to decrease aggregation of particles, ad good contrast can be realized without color mixing.
