The method of image marking on the rim of a motor vehicle steering wheel involves using two template sheets (22,22a) which are symmetrical and placed over the rim. Pressurised water is used to etch the surface using the templates as a mask. The faces of the rim are treated in succession with one side being masked off before the second is etched.
