PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for measuring a distance using light beams are provided to precisely measure even a long distance by using an optical system having a high resolution, thereby reducing manufacturing cost. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for measuring a distance using light beams includes a light source(1) for emitting light beams, a beam splitter(3) mounted at one side of the light source for splitting the emitted light beams to first and second light beams, a movable reflection mirror(5) fixed to a movable element for the second light beams to return, a slant reflection mirror(7) coupled at one side of the beam splitter for the first light beams to return slantingly by a predetermined angle, a light receiving part(9) mounted at the other side of the beam splitter for detecting an interference pattern generated by the adding of the reflected first and second light beams, and a phase grating(11) mounted between the beam splitter and the light receiving part for passing a predetermined part of the interference pattern.
