PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an edge separation failure occurring in a width directional end part of a maximum width belt layer to improve durability. SOLUTION: This heavy load pneumatic radial tire has belt layers comprising at least two steel cord layers crossing each other. A cord angle to a tire circumferential direction EE' of a maximum width belt layer 4a of the belt layers is set to 18-24 degrees in a crossing area R to a belt layer adjacent to the maximum width belt layer 4a, while set to 28-37 degrees in a free end area S to a tire width direction terminal of the maximum width belt layer 4a not crossing the adjacent belt layer.
