PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid fuel burner having a short flame length and a high radiant heat transfer efficiency and provide a method with which stable turndown operation can be conducted. SOLUTION: A liquid fuel burner comprises a fuel atomizer 12 for atomizing and jetting liquid fuel to the center of a conical combustion chamber 11 whose end side is outstretched and comprises a primary combustion-sustaining gas nozzle 13 at the outer periphery of the atomizer 12, which jets the primary combustion-sustaining gas as a swirling flow as if encompassing the fuel jetted from the atomizer 12. The burner is provided with a secondary combustion- sustaining gas nozzle 14 for jetting secondary combustion-sustaining gas into the combustion chamber as a swirling flow, which nozzle 14 is located more at a combustion chamber end side than the nozzle 13. When conducting a turndown operation, the supply rate of the primary combustion-sustaining gas is kept at 80-120% of a rated operation to control only the flow rate of the secondary combustion-sustaining gas.
