The needle bar drive (5) is supported on a lever (4) that can swing about a pivot (3) to produce an oval needle path. The swing motion is taken from the main drive shaft (6) through an eccentric (11) and swinging link (16). Control links (21A,21B,21C,21D) are adjusted by a stepping motor (37) through a central controller to determine the extent and direction of the swinging motion.
