The play apparatus has two or more hollow cubes (2, 4) each with two open adjoining side walls and otherwise closed side walls with the external dimensions selectively decreasing so that the cubes slide into each other. The closed side walls have on the outside fastening elements (17) for detachably connecting the cubes together by connectors (20). Extra elements (18) which also have fastening elements detachably connect with the cubes to produce different play items. The fastening elements can be magnets, touch and close fasteners, tapes etc. The extra elements are steering wheels, masts and sails, animal heads and other items to produce infinite variety of toy items
