The method involves determining the rotation of the drilling or expansion machine or of the drilling rod (7) or of the pipe to be pulled in, regulating the feed depending on the measured rotation so that the tool revolution rate remains essentially constant and the feed is reduced, adjusted or reversed if the rotation of the drill or expansion tool, rod or pipe falls to below a defined demand value. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for automatically controlling a drilling machine.
