An over-voltage protection device has a first terminal (KL1) for connection to a control terminal (G) of the semiconductor power switch (T1,T2) and a second terminal (KL2) for connection to a reference node (V2) in the load circuit. The over-voltage protector (SV) has a bipolar transistor (BT) having its collector-emitter circuit (K-E) wired by itself or as part of a series-circuit between the first and second terminals (KL1,KL2), and having a base terminal (B) to which a current source (DT) is connected.
