PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation of toughness of a metal-based composite material by preliminarily baking a reinforcement material at a temperature immediately below the melting point of the reinforcement material before forming the reinforcement material, forming the obtained preliminarily baked body, and then performing the main baking. SOLUTION: Only a reinforcement material 1 is used for a raw material, and no inorganic binder is used. The reinforcement material 1 is placed on a pan 12 in a baking furnace 10, and preliminarily baked using a heating body 11. The temperature of the preliminary baking is immediately below the melting point of the reinforcement material 1, and more specifically, in the temperature range from the melting point to the temperature lower than the melting point by 100 deg.C, and the reinforcement material is preferably maintained at that temperature for at least one minute. The obtained preliminarily baked body 2 is charged in a die 13, and a die of complicated shape is pressed by a preform forming machine 15 from the above to form the preliminarily baked body into a desired shape. The formed preliminarily baked body 2 is taken out and placed in the baking furnace again for the main baking. The temperature and the time required for the main baking may be the same as that in baking a regular preform. A preform 3 of complicated shape can be obtained thereby. |
