PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain an advantageous effect not only in the ferroelectric anisotropy and/or melting point of a chiral/smectic mixture but also in the switching action even when the amount of addition is small by adding a specified benzothiophene derivative to a liquid crystal mixture. SOLUTION: A benzothiophene derivative represented by the formula is used as a component of a liquid crystal mixture. In the formula, X1 and X2, which are independently of each other, are each -CH-, -CF-, -(R1)C-, or -(R1A1-M1)C-; Y1 and Y2, which are independent of each other, are each hydrogen or fluorine, provided that they can not be fluorine atoms simultaneously; Z is hydrogen or fluorine; R1 and R2, which are independent of each other, are each a 1-20C linear or branched alkyl regardless of the presence or absence of an asymmetric carbon atom; A1 and A2, which are independent of each other, are each-phenylene-1,4-diyl, phenylene-1,3-diyl, or the like; M1 is -OC(=O)-, -OC(=O)O-, -OCH2-, a single bond, or the like, regardless of the direction; and m is 0 or 1. |
