PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roll superior in grinding property and to improve the productivity of cold rolling as a result of it. SOLUTION: In a composite work roll for cold rolling, which is constituted by forming its outer layer on the periphery of a core metal consisting of cast steel or forged steel by a continuous tinkering method, the component of the outer-layer material consists of, by weight, 0.5-1.2% C, 0.2-2.0% Si, 0.2-2.0% Mn, 4.0-8.0% Cr, 1.0-3.0% Mo, 0.1-3.0% V and the balance consisting of Fe with inevitable elements.
