Gaseous oxygen is produced first making liquid oxygen by liquefying and rectifying untreated air, then compressing the liquid oxygen to a preset pressure and evaporating it by introducing it at that pressure into a heat exchanger. The oxygen gas flows upwards at a linear velocity at least equal to the terminal velocity (u) of a droplet of liquid oxygen having a diameter of 200 micro m where u = ((4g<2>( rho L - pi G)2 Dp<3>)//(225 mu rho G))1/3 g is gravity; pi L and pi G are the density of saturated liquid and saturated gaseous oxygen at the preset pressure; rho is viscosity of the saturated oxygen gas at the preset pressure and DP is droplet diameter. Preferably the linear velocity is at least equal to the terminal velocity of a droplet of 500 micro m or more preferably 1mm where u = ((3.03g<2>( rho L - pi G) Dp<3>)//( rho G))2.
