The object of the invention is a method, and a speech encoder and a decoder, respectively, for digital coding of a speech signal at low transmission rates. The method according to the invention applies linear prediction. The speech encoder according to the invention comprises several coding blocks. The speech encoder according to the invention can utilize simple algorithms to select the excitation and to provide a high speech quality.
