Telephone interface system includes signaling method for communication between exchange and user terminal

The system uses tables of information enabling interpretation of message codes for display on user interface. The control interface (32) for a switching system (4) sends messages to a terminal (40), the messages containing coded semantic descriptions of elements which are to be presented to a user via the man-machine interface (41) of the terminal. Some of the elements relate to signaling functions whereby the control interface waits for responses from the telephone equipment. The terminal uses translation tables (44) to translate the descriptions of the elements received in the messages into commands which are adapted to the man-machine interface, in order to present these elements and pick up the anticipated responses. The messages of the system comprise labels in XML language, and the protocol used within the system is TCP/IP.
