The method involves clamping the workpiece (W) to be aligned at the ends and rotating it through 360 degrees, determining the position curve for a sensor (20) contact point (17') depending on angle over the 360 degrees, computing the deviation of the position from that for an ideal straight part and controlling an alignment program accordingly. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for flexural alignment of an elongated workpiece.
